I don’t get this whole U2 malarky, I really don’t.
I fail to see how four decidedly average musicians who write consistently average songs for mind numbingly average albums can whip hordes of ordinarily average people into a U2 hungry delirium, the likes of which causes some of them to want to queue for four days on a cold Dublin street for their latest fix of musical banality.
I don’t get it.
I don’t get that when asked if I like U2 and reply that I don’t (a mortal sin for an Irishman) that I’m made feel as if I’ve just taken a dump on the Pope, on Easter Sunday, in St Peter’s Square, during communion.
I really don’t get it.

I had to endure the entire new album yesterday at work while one of our radio stations played it uninterrupted. The kids went to their concert last year and paid $90 for the priviledge of ‘standing’ and listening to Bono wax lyrical about world injustice . . seemed a little hypocritical for a man who officially lives in Holland to avoid paying Irish Tax!
You’re not alone.
I listened to a U2 album once. Like a whale song cd, it put me right to sleep.
Joshua Tree?
Otherwise I agree…
a triumph of marketing over substance….
Baino, you poor thing. Earplugs?
Maxi, I get too angry to sleep. There are so many great new Irish bands out there now that sadly will never make too much of an international mark because fucking U2 are hogging that bloody stage.
NRAU2F, the joshua tree was purely conceived, written, recorded and produced for the sole purpose of ‘breaking’ America. So much for artistic inspiration.
Rob, and great management!
Yes indeed they are talentless cunts. I think some sort of mass hysteria takes place. Mind you, most U2 fans I have met are wankers so I guess its just horses for courses eh?
Bald Devil loves you all.
It’s a machine.
-Carefully manufacturing synthetic ‘passion’.
-Producing ‘music’ for people who don’t really care about music.
-Operated by people who only care about money.
Banality and averageness is king..Just listen to the ball-less,souless generic shite that is played on daytime radio,Its made for people with no imagination.. There are 3 bands so similar sounding that get ridiculous amounts of airplay on today fm,that it had to be pointed out to me that they weren’t all the same band..I’m not going to mention them for fear of someone checking them out, each one of them would destroy a part of your soul..
As for U2,that juggernaut is beyond criticism as slagging them off is akin to a harvest mouse trying to have a knife fight with a Blue Whale, utterly pointless…
Well looks like they are still selling lots of their “music”:-

10th number 1 Uk album for them…
“I don’t get this whole U2 malarkey, I really don’t.”
Same reason the Grateful Dead dragged several thousand fans around with them wherever they went never mind the several thousand more that showed up wherever they went.
Don’t get me wrong, I liked some of the Dead tunes but as a band they were…well…really bad most of the time.
I thought it was the opposite, that it was a crime for an Irish person to like U2. I’d never admit it in public for fear of being stoned.
It’s not like I leg it out and buy their albums or listen to them much, but when they’re on the radio my foot always starts tapping. I’m really proud of them, that they stayed together for so damn long.
Also I loved the graffiti outside Bono’s house that read – “Bono I flick my flaps to your music”.
That’s real Killiney class, that is.
When you believe in something rather than just playing the music sometimes it makes all the difference in the world. I respect Bono and the band for what they managed to accomplish (which was quite a lot) and what they managed to get away with during a very volatile period in Ireland’s history…
…but I never really liked their music.
It’s great, no one really gives a shit about them over here. I mean, some eejits like them but I can say what I like about them and no one cares a hoot. I don’t miss the Irish cynicism one bit. Plus, listening to U2 over here doesn’t make me feel patriotic one little bit…..however watching Father Ted does.
